Having your money split between accounts can be a blessing or a curse. For my wife and I, it was a curse last week. Here’s the story:

My wife and I have had a checking account and a savings account with Regions Bank for about 2 and a half years. I’ve had my name on a different account with them for about 10-12 years, though I don’t do anything with it. Unfortunately, we also have an account with bank of Nashville. There’s nothing wrong with Bank of Nashville… in fact, they are a great bank. But the only reason we have account with them is that they dropped the fees associated with our mortgage because we opened a checking account.

Ok, with our money is several accounts, my wife and I lost track of what was were for a few days. Becuase of this, we accidentally overdrafted on our Regions checking account. If you are at all familiar with banks, you know that they love overdraft fees. They took out the largest deductions first, causing several other small transactions to overdraft, each accruing a $31.00 fee. After everything was said and done, we had $93 worth of overdraft fees, and a negative balance.

At first, I was pretty ticked at the bank for not kicking in overdraft protection and pulling the transactions from one of the other accounts we have with them. While I still think that they should do that, it doesn’t matter, because we should have kept better track of our money in the first place. I was still puzzled though. I called the bank and was forwarded to the branch manager. She wasn’t available, so I left a message. She promptly called me back and I discussed the situation with her. I explained to her that I was a little confused as to why overdraft protection didn’t cover this, that this was embarrassing and had never happened before, and that we had transferred money from another account into this account so that is was back upright. The manager looked at our account and told us she wasn’t sure why we didn’t have overdraft protect. She then activated it for us, and refunded us the entire overdraft fee that we accrued. Needless to say, that was really great customer service. She was under absolutely no obligation to do that, but she was willing to anyways. It’s not often that you see good customer service anymore, so Regions Bank (well, that branch at least) is on my good list right now.
